Miho Sakuma
Miho Sakuma is a professional flutist from Tokyo, currently based in Vienna. She specializes in contemporary music and performs on the full flute family, including piccolo, alto, and bass flute.
She graduated at the top of her class from both Kunitachi College of Music in Tokyo and the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna. She then completed her Master’s degree in Contemporary Music at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, and in 2025 will begin postgraduate studies in Contemporary Music at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz.
Miho is a prizewinner of several international competitions, including second prize in the Contemporary Music Division of the 14th Treviso International Music Competition, fourth prize at the 4th Asia Flute Competition in Kobe, and was a semi-finalist at the Gheorghe Dima International Music Competition in Romania.
She has performed with numerous orchestras, including the Wiener Sinfonie Orchester (2021–2024), the Junge Philharmonie Wien, and as principal flutist on tour with the Johann Strauss Operette Wien Orchester. She is also a longtime member of the Mozart Festival Chamber Orchestra in Japan.
Dedicated to contemporary repertoire, Miho has premiered many new works, including the European premiere of Wataru Mukai’s opera "The Mirror of Nomori" (2024) and the world premiere of "Yaegaki-hime", a bunraku puppet opera by Hibiki Mukai (2025). She has also performed with the Webern Ensemble Wien and participated in new music festivals and projects across Europe and Japan.
