Duo Lamell-Matthys
Formed in 2019 at Indiana University’s renowned Jacobs School of Music, Duo Lamell-Matthys unites Austrian-American clarinetist Josef Lamell and Belgian pianist-singer Nathalie Matthys. Now based in Vienna, the duo creates genre-blending programs that combine classical, contemporary, and crossover music, captivating audiences with their dynamic artistry and engaging stage presence.
Their musical partnership is rooted in a shared love of creative exploration—blending Nathalie’s passion for jazz and songwriting with Josef’s distinctive arrangements. Together, they have performed across Europe and the U.S., collaborating with artists like Paul Gulda and Roby Lakatos, and appearing at festivals and venues including the Leopold Museum Vienna, Musicorum Brussels, Arte Amanti, and Take 5 Vienna.
Josef Lamell holds degrees in music and computer science from institutions in the U.S. and Austria. He performs internationally as a soloist, chamber musician, and arranger, with orchestral experience that includes the Cleveland Orchestra and the Houston Symphony.
Nathalie Matthys is an acclaimed pianist and vocalist, with a Master of Music from the Royal Conservatory of Ghent and advanced studies in the U.S. She performs widely in both classical and jazz settings and is active as a teacher, organizer, and online creator.
Together, Duo Lamell-Matthys offers refreshing, boundary-crossing programs that reflect a new generation of versatile classical musicians.
